How to Convert AVI Video to DVD?
Question: Anyone knows some good video conversion software I can use for my Mac? I need something that will convert AVI files to DVD so I can watch them on my DVD player. Right now I am using iDVD which is working but the quality of the picture doesn't seem so good.
Answer: You have to understand that the DVD quality may be lower than the original .avi because the video file get compressed in MPEG2 (the DVD format), on iDVD you can easily change the quality settings, but if the video is too long you may not achieve a reasonable bit rate (number of bit per seconds used to compress the video, higher means better quality).
To get higher quality you may use a Double Layer DVD (if your Mac has a DL super drive) or you can split the video into two parts.
Software that may help you a lot on video conversions is DVD Creator for Mac, which can easily convert AVI files to DVD on Mac without losing quality.
Check the following step by step guide on how to convert AVI to DVD on Mac OS X (including Snow Leopard).
Step1. Install the AVI to DVD Converter for Mac
Step2. Import AVI Video Files
Step3. Start Burning
After you finish all your setting, you can insert the proper DVD type like DVD-9 or DVD-5, then click "Start", and wait for the program to burn your fresh DVD.
Note: Before burning video to DVD, you can edit AVI video.

What is AVI?
AVI, an acronym for Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container format developed by Microsoft in 1992. An AVI file can carry audio/visual data inside in almost any compression scheme, including: MPEG-4, XviD, DivX and others. AVI has become a de-facto standard because it is widely supported on hardware and by operating systems. Most AVIs contain a DivX, and require a QuickTime component to be used on a Mac.
