Disney's A Christmas Carol

Disney's A Christmas Carol is being released on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 16th, 2010, so by the time you read this, you may be able to pick it up at the store, or stick it in your Amazon cart now as a pre-order and you'll have it before Thanksgiving.

Starring Jim Carrey, who is making a habit of being in great Christmas movies, and directed by Robert Zemeckis (director of that other holiday classic, The Polar Express), this Disney animated film tells the classic story of Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future (all of whom are played by Jim Carrey). It is a MUST HAVE if you love Christmas movies. The animation is excellent and in some cases I find myself forgetting that it is animated.

The film is also surprisingly faithful to Dickens' work, with most of the dialogue coming straight from the novella. Of course, this also makes it somewhat darker than your typical Christmas tale, so if you have young children who scare easily, you may want to stick to Rudolph and Frosty (although frankly, I was such an impressionable child that I found even parts of those movies scary, so I guess it depends on your kids LOL)

It's a great movie and it will look particularly good on your HD television, so I recommend picking up the Blu-Ray release even if you don't have HD or Blu-Ray yet. Since this release comes with four discs, including the standard definition DVD, if you are planning on upgrading to HD anytime in the near future, it is your best bet.

Can't get enough of A Christmas Carol or maybe you just hate Jim Carrey and/or animation? You're in luck.

Also being released on Blu-Ray in November 2010 is the 1984 television movie, A Christmas Carol, starring George C. Scott as Scrooge. This quite faithful adaption of Dickens' original story by Clive Donner features an excellent performance by George S. Scott and the supporting cast are all great too.

I haven't seen any news about potential features on this release, so I don't even know if it is a remaster. I personally would wait to pick this up after its release date (November 9th) on Blu-Ray so you can make sure the transfer is worth owning.

“For the sake of the person who dropped it, I hope this is a devious marketing scheme,” said Paul Saffo, a veteran Silicon Valley forecaster. “But I think it is unlikely. There is no one else on the planet whose shoes I would less like to be in it at the moment.”

In a blog post on Monday detailing how it obtained the phone, Gizmodo said it was left by an iPhone software engineer at Gourmet Haus Staudt, a German specialty store and beer garden in Redwood City.

The person who found the phone peddled it to Gizmodo, which bought it for $5,000, Nick Denton, chief executive of Gawker Media, which owns Gizmodo, said by instant message.

His company’s sites have had a longstanding practice of paying for scoops, and the windfall was tangible. Traffic spiked on Monday, and at midday more than one million visitors stopped by the site in one hour to see pictures of the coveted gadget.

By late in the day, reports began to surface on the Internet that Apple’s chief executive, Steven P. Jobs, had called Gizmodo to get the device back. Mr. Denton declined to comment, saying any conversation between Mr. Jobs and Gizmodo would most likely have been off the record.

“We haven’t had any formal communication with Apple,” he said. Brian Lam, the editor in chief of Gizmodo, said his publication would “probably” return the device to Apple.

From the front, it looks similar to the current iPhone, but it has sharper edges and is a little thinner. The volume and power buttons are stylistically different, and the back of the phone appears to be a ceramic glass, which would enable better reception. That would address a persistent problem that has plagued the iPhone since its inception three years ago.

Late Monday night, Gizmodo said that it received a letter from Bruce Sewell, Apple’s senior vice president and general counsel, requesting the phone back. “It has come to our attention that Gizmodo is currently in possession of a device that belongs to Apple,” Mr. Sewell wrote in a letter that Gizmodo published.

“This letter constitutes a formal request that you return the device to Apple,” the letter said.

New Planets Found; Have Backward Orbits

"Bombshell" discovery could reduce the chances for Earthlike worlds.

A chart shows five of the six exoplanets discovered with backward orbits. The last object at lower right, WASP 5b, has a "normal" orbital path.

In a batch of 27 planets found outside our solar system, half a dozen have "wrong way" orbits, astronomers have announced.
Each of the six extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, orbits in the opposite direction as its star's rotation. Such backward motion is unlike anything seen in our solar system.

What's more, the discovery of these odd exoplanets challenges a leading theory for the formation of planets known as hot Jupiters, which in turn means that fewer Earthlike planets may exist in the universe. (See "The Search for New Earths" in National Geographic magazine.)

"This is a real bomb we are dropping into the field of exoplanets," study co-author Amaury Triaud, a Ph.D. student at the Observatory of Geneva in Switzerland, said in a press statement.

Odd Planets Orbit Backward and Tilted

First discovered 15 years ago, hot Jupiters are exoplanets with masses greater than Jupiter's that orbit very close to their parent stars.

In general, it's believed that all planets form out of disks of dust and gas that swirl around some young stars. (Read "Newborn Planet Found Orbiting Young Star.")

These disks should rotate in the same directions as the stars inside, the theory goes. Planets that coalesce out of the disks should therefore share the same orbital direction and should move within a single, tabletop-like plane around their stars.

For hot Jupiters, the leading theory has been that the massive planets take shape in the cold, outer reaches of their star systems. Gravitational interactions with material in the disks guide the massive planets to close-in orbits within just a few million years.

"Until recently, that was kind of the canonical picture on how these hot Jupiters migrated to their current locations," Avi Mandell, an exoplanet expert at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, told National Geographic News.

But recently astronomers with the Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) program found nine new hot Jupiters that transit—or pass in front of—their stars, as seen from Earth. (Related: "Five New Planets Found; Hotter Than Molten Lava.")

Combined with older observations of transiting hot Jupiters, two of the new finds become part of a group of six "wrong way" exoplanets.

In addition, those six planets are part of a larger group of hot Jupiters tracked in the study with orbits that are no longer in the same "tabletop" plane as the rotation axes of their parent stars.

"It's quite an extraordinary result," Mandell said. "[It] means that most of these exoplanets could have been formed in a way that's different from what had been [most commonly] theorized before."

Hot Jupiter Planets Form via Tug-of-War?

The researchers don't know exactly how the oddball planets formed, said study co-author Andrew Collier Cameron of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. But there is another theory for how hot Jupiters form.

Hot Jupiters might close in on their stars much more slowly than predicted, over a period of hundreds of millions of years, due to a gravitational tug-of-war with a distant star or companion planet.

This gravity battle tilts a planet into a different orbital plane, the theory goes, and elongates the planet's orbital path. On this eccentric orbit, the planet periodically passes much closer than normal to its host star. (Related: "Eccentric Exoplanet Gets Hot Flashes.")

The gravitational push and pull between the planet and its star bleeds off some energy during the close pass, so that the planet's orbit decays, and eventually the planet settles into a tight, tilted orbit.

"Rampaging Jupiter" Would Blow Away Earthlike Planets

Cameron, who presented the findings this week at the British Royal Astronomical Society's 2010 National Astronomy Meeting in Glasgow, said the theory could also solve at least one other vexing problem with hot Jupiters.

"The [previous theory] works well for getting the planets into their orbits, but it's absolutely lousy for stopping them once they get there," he said. "Nobody has really come up with a satisfactory explanation for why they don't smash into the star at the end."

In the new theory, a planet's rate of orbital decay has decreased by the time the planet gets really close to its star, allowing the planet to ease into a new orbit rather than spiral toward a collision.

However, the new theory would spell doom for any Earthlike planets that might try to take shape alongside a hot Jupiter.

If hot Jupiters move into their tight orbits in a few million years, as previously suggested, rocky Earthlike worlds would have plenty of time afterward to form in more distant orbits.

But if the hot Jupiter is on a slower migration, "you have a rampaging Jupiter on a cometlike orbit that's whizzing close to the star and then out again. ... ," Cameron explained.

"It's going to be crossing the feeding zone where terrestrial planets would form, and its gravity means that the planetary debris [needed] to form terrestrial planets is going to be completely blown away."

Google stops censoring China-based search services

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Google Inc. said Monday it has stopped censoring results on its Chinese search engine after weeks of negotiations with local authorities over the matter, effectively shutting it down in a dramatic move that could imperil the company's presence in the world's largest Internet market.

Google is now redirecting traffic away from google.cn to Hong Kong-based google.com.hk, which offers Chinese-language service with uncensored results.
Google's /quotes/comstock/15*!goog/quotes/nls/goog (GOOG 557.00, -0.50, -0.09%) chief legal officer, David Drummond, wrote on a company Web site that service at google.com.hk is "specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong."

Google announced in January that it had traced a sophisticated cyber-attack to China, and as a result would no longer filter results in its Chinese search service. Google acknowledged that the move could result in having to withdraw from direct competition in China, where Internet search sites are required to censor politically sensitive topics.
Since then, Google has sought to engage with Chinese authorities over how it could operate in the country without filtering results. Theoretically, China-based users could continue to connect to sites such as google.com or google.com.hk following the company's shuttering of google.cn, though their access could become unreliable.
"We want as many people in the world as possible to have access to our services, including users in mainland China, yet the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement," Drummond wrote. Visit Google's blog.
"We believe this new approach of providing uncensored search in simplified Chinese from google.com.hk is a sensible solution to the challenges we've faced," he added. "We very much hope that the Chinese government respects our decision, though we are well aware that it could at any time block access to our services."

In addition to search, Google has other operations in China, and offers its Android mobile-phone operating system there.
Google will continue its research and development work in China, and will also continue to maintain a sales presence there, according to Drummond.

Shares of Google fell slightly to close at $557.50. Baidu's U.S.-traded shares rose more than 1% to close at $579.72.

Jerome B. York, commonly known as Jerry York (1938 – March 18, 2010), was an American businessman, and the Chairman, President and CEO of Harwinton Capital. He was the former CFO of IBM and Chrysler. He was also CEO of Micro Warehouse and joined the board of directors of Apple Computer in 1997.
He was a chief aide to Kirk Kerkorian and his Tracinda investment company. Most recently, Kerkorian helped elect York to the board of directors of General Motors, from which he had previously resigned.

Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that Mr. York had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on Tuesday night at his home in Rochester, Mich. He was taken to the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Pontiac, Mich., where he died.
Mr. York was the chief financial officer at International Business Machines from 1993 to 1995 and spent 14 years at Chrysler as well as serving on a number of corporate boards.
“Jerry joined Apple’s Board in 1997 when most doubted the company’s future,” said Steven P. Jobs, the company’s chief executive. “He has been a pillar of financial and business expertise and insight on our board for over a dozen years.”

In January 2006, when Mr. Kerkorian was the largest investor in G.M., Mr. York spoke in Detroit of the need for the company, which lost $8.6 billion in 2005, to take radical action to address its financial problems. “The time has come to go into crisis mode and act accordingly,” Mr. York said.
He questioned why G.M. needed to keep selling Saturn, Saab and Hummer models, and suggested that the company halve its dividend, cut pay for top executives and emulate the turnaround plans carried out by Carlos Ghosn, the chief executive at Nissan of Japan and Renault of France.
A month later, Mr. York was named to the G.M. board, and in June 2006, Mr. Kerkorian wrote to Rick Wagoner, G.M.’s chief executive at the time, and Mr. Ghosn suggesting that the pair consider forming an alliance.
Although the two companies discussed the idea, the negotiations broke down over G.M.’s insistence that Renault and Nissan pay a $10 billion premium to G.M., which considered its reputation greater than that of the foreign carmakers.
Mr. York left the G.M. board soon afterward, deeply critical of the company’s reluctance to move more quickly. In a letter to G.M., Mr. York said he had not found “an environment in the boardroom that is very receptive to probing much beyond” data provided by management.
In a statement Thursday, Mr. Kerkorian said of Mr. York, “He was a unique individual with boundless courage, charisma and intellect, and a deep appreciation of the automotive industry.”
Jerome Bailey York was born on June 22, 1938, in Memphis. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and earned a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.
A decade before urging G.M. to make changes, Mr. York served as Mr. Kerkorian’s point man in efforts to increase shareholder benefits at Chrysler. Mr. Kerkorian was also the largest shareholder there until the company merged with Daimler-Benz of Germany in 1998.
Mr. York joined Mr. Kerkorian’s Tracinda Corporation in 1995, a few months after Mr. Kerkorian made an unsuccessful bid to buy Chrysler in tandem with Lee Iacocca, the company’s former chief executive. Mr. York’s arrival was seen as an effort by Mr. Kerkorian to demonstrate his seriousness about yielding more benefits for shareholders at Chrysler, which Mr. Kerkorian felt had not paid high enough dividends.
Mr. York came to Tracinda from I.B.M., which he joined in 1993 as chief financial officer, part of the management team assembled by Louis V. Gerstner in his turnaround effort there.
At I.B.M., Mr. York assigned hundreds of managers to cost-cutting task forces, finding ways to save an estimated $2 billion. He was so well regarded on Wall Street that when his departure for Tracinda was announced, I.B.M. shares fell 2 percent as other computer company stocks rallied.
Before that, Mr. York was a finance executive at Chrysler in the 1980s, working with Mr. Iacocca in an effort to transform the company after it received federal loan guarantees from Congress.
One rare miss for Mr. York came with Micro Warehouse, a direct marketer of computers. Mr. York and a group of investors paid $275 million for the company, where he was chief executive from 2000 to 2003. But when the technology bubble burst, Micro Warehouse was sold to a competitor for just $22 million and filed for bankruptcy shortly thereafter.
Mr. York is survived by his wife, Eilene M. York; four children; and six grandchildren.
In early 2009, Mr. York predicted in an interview with Reuters that G.M. might be forced by the federal government to go through a “cram-down, quickie bankruptcy” in order to survive.
“There are no great choices here,” he said. “There are only bad choices. The question is what is the least bad choice.”
G.M. filed for bankruptcy protection in June 2009, and emerged a month later, assisted by $50 billion in federal aid. As part of its restructuring, it sold Hummer and Saab and closed Saturn. It cut its dividend and its executive salaries while trying to speed its decision-making — all things Mr. York had suggested years earlier.

BlackBerry owners have eye for iPhone, Nexus One

It appears many BlackBerry users aren't married to their choice of smartphones.
The company has succeeded by putting the low-cost but functional wireless devices into the hands of mid-level execs with no previous smartphone experience. BlackBerry wasn't much (for the most part) of an innovator technologically as it was in business and that's OK. As a nerd, though, it's the tech that appeals to me, and that's why I go for things like my iPhone. And I'm not the only one.

Indeed, a recent survey by Crowd Science of smartphone owners shows that 40 percent of BlackBerry users--are planning to switch from their current devices to Apple's iPhone when their current contract expires. What's more, 32 percent, nearly a third, would switch from their BlackBerry to Google's Android-powered Nexus One if given the chance.

The study also shows that about 90 percent of iPhone and Android users don't plan on switching devices when their next chance to upgrade comes. The highest BlackBerry scored here was about 66 percent.

This does show that the majority of BlackBerry owners plan to stay as BlackBerry owners, but the loyalty rate is far lower than with other smartphone makers. This would suggest that Apple and Google have a chance to chisel away at RIM's users and, most likely, will.

Click on "setting" button to select output options. You may select MP4, WMV, MOV, etc. and simply click on Start button to convert DRM videos.
